Steve Spurrier will never pass up an opportunity to crow.
The Alliance of American Football pulled the plug on its season this week, and that is resulting in refunds for people who chose to wager on the inaugural champion. The league has said it is holding out hope for an eventual return, but once it becomes official that this thing just isn’t happening, a host of sportsbooks are set to offer refunds.
Sportsbooks at the Westgate, William Hill, and MGM Resorts all told Covers.com’s Patrick Everson they will refund all futures bets once a cancelled season is officially announced.
Meanwhile, FanDuel Sportsbook took it a slight step further. They announced on Wednesday that they will refund straight futures bets, which will cost the company just under $10,000, according to ESPN. Furthermore, they decided to name the 7-1 Orlando Apollos the inaugural champions due to their league-best record.
“The AAF should be commended for trying to do something disruptive in the sports landscape, and we hope this symbolic gesture shows the players and coaches that sports fans everywhere appreciated the hard work and sacrifices they made for entertaining us with Spring Football,” said Mike Raffensperger, CMO of FanDuel Group. “While we’ve declared the Apollos honorary champions, we think the biggest winners should be our customers and hope they enjoy their payouts.”
FanDuel said if they had the power they would also name Steve Spurrier the AAF coach of the year. They might not have the power to do that or officially name a champion and this will be nothing more than a historical footnote, but it’s safe to say Spurrier will take any opportunity to talk a little smack.
The best thing that I couldn't get in the story: Spurrier called Arizona HC Rick Neuheisel as the word was circulating Tuesday. "I said, 'Ricky congratulations on finishing second in the Alliance this year.'" https://t.co/Gi1gsMvU8x
